Can Mycoplasma genitalium be treated?
If you test positive for Mycoplasma genitalium, we provide treatment options at our clinics, which can be collected either in-person or posted for delivery for your convenience.
How is Mycoplasma genitalium treated?
The usual treatment for Mycoplasma genitalium involves taking oral antibiotics for a period of 7 to 10 days, although the duration may vary depending on individual circumstances.
Your clinician will prescribe the appropriate treatment and provide instructions during your appointment.
Are there any side effects?
Since there are several medication options for treating Mycoplasma genitalium, it is recommended to discuss with your clinician any potential side effects related to the specific medication they prescribe for you.
How effective is the treatment for Mycoplasma genitalium?
Treatment for Mycoplasma genitalium is highly effective.
However, there is a possibility for the infection to persist despite treatment. Therefore, it is recommended to undergo a test of cure four weeks after completing the treatment to check if the infection has been successfully cured.
How long does the Mycoplasma genitalium treatment take to work?
It typically takes around 7 to 14 days for a Mycoplasma genitalium infection to clear.
It is important to note that symptoms may improve or disappear before this timeframe. However, it is crucial to complete the full treatment as prescribed in order to fully eliminate the infection and prevent any potential recurrence.
What happens if I have symptoms after finishing my Mycoplasma genitalium treatment?
It is common to experience symptoms after completing your treatment. It is important to avoid having sex and to consult a clinician if you are still experiencing symptoms following completed treatment.
When is a test of cure recommended?
We recommend a Test of Cure 4 weeks after treatment to ensure the Mycoplasma genitalium infection has been cured.
You will need to wait 4 weeks before having a Test of Cure as dead DNA from the infection can still be traceable for up to 3 weeks following completed treatment. If you get tested before this, your result may not be conclusive.
Will my partner also need Mycoplasma genitalium treatment?
If you have tested positive for Mycoplasma genitalium, it is important for your partners to also get tested and treated (if appropriate).
To prevent reinfection you should avoid any sexual contact with your partners until you have received a conclusively negative test result, and you are sure that your partners are not infected, or have been treated and tested negative following a Test of Cure.
How long do I have to wait to have sex after starting treatment?
Ideally you should avoid any sexual contact for atleast 14 days after starting your treatment, and until any symptoms have resolved.
If you cannot abstain for 14 days, it is essentail to avoid any unprotected sex, and to use condoms.
