We will make sure we can feel the implant – if not, we will refer you for an ultrasound.
Sexual & Contraceptive History

What is a Hormonal Implant?
A contraceptive implant is a small plastic, flexible rod, which is fitted under the skin and lasts up to 3 years. It provides over 99% effectiveness against pregnancy.
How does the hormonal implant work?
The contraceptive implant works in 3 ways:
- It inhibits ovulation
- It thins the endometrium (lining of the uterus)
- It thickens cervical mucus to prevent sperm from entering the uterus
Is implant removal & fitting painful?
It is not painful to have your implant fitted and removed as the procedure is performed under a local anaesthetic. Our specialist will walk you through what to expect and how to be prepared. We will make sure you are relaxed and comfortable.
