Frequently Asked Questions

Can Chlamydia be treated?
K
L

Yes, Chlamydia can be easily treated using a 7 day course of antibiotics.

How effective is the treatment for Chlamydia?
K
L

The treatment for Chlamydia is very effective.
However, due to the overuse of antibiotics worldwide, some infections can become resistant to the medication we use. This is why we change the antibiotics and dose if there is a growing resistance against one type of antibiotic. For the treatment to be most effective, it is very important that you follow the instructions your clinician provides you. Please complete the full course of medication even if you feel better.

How long does the Chlamydia treatment take to work?
K
L

The antibiotics begin to work once they are inside of your body. However, it may take a few days for the symptoms to relieve themselves and resolve completely. This is why you are given a 7 day course of antibiotics to ensure that you are completely cured.

What happens if I have symptoms after finishing my Chlamydia treatment?
K
L

If you are still experiencing symptoms, we may recommend a test of cure 4 weeks after you have started your treatment.

As the Chlamydia DNA can still be in your body for up to 4 weeks after starting the course of antibiotics, a test of cure done in this period can come back positive. This is why a Chlamydia test, when needed, is done 4 weeks after starting the course of antibiotics.

You may also wish to consider testing for other key infections such as Gonorrhoea, Trichomonas vaginalis and Mycoplasma genitalium.

When is a test of cure recommended?
K
L

A routine Test of Cure for Chlamydia is not needed. We may, however, recommend a test 4 weeks after starting treatment in the following cases:

  • You are pregnant.
  • You are planning a pregnancy.
  • You have not taken the medication as directed.
  • You have had sexual contact before finishing treatment.
  • You have a history of treatment failure.
  • Or, your symptoms have not completely gone.

When can I have sex again?
K
L

To be sure the antibiotic has eradicated the infection, we advise no sexual contact for 7 days. If your partner had treatment after you, then it must be 7 days after their treatment.

If there has been any serious diarrhoea and vomiting, you may need to repeat the treatment, so advisable not to have any sex if unsure.

Will my partner also need Chlamydia treatment?
K
L

Yes, if you have had unprotected sex with them.

Chlamydia is a very easy infection to pass on so we strongly advise that you inform your current partner(s) to be treated and tested. It is also advised that you inform any other sexual partner(s) from the last 6 months that you have the infection, so that these people can also get tested and treated. This breaks the chain of infection and prevents it from spreading to others.

Do I need a follow up after finishing my Chlamydia treatment?
K
L

You can book for a follow up appointment if you are still experiencing symptoms or you have concerns and questions that need answering.
